Flock.

http://www.flock.com/

My precious little gem of a browser, and yet I haven’t actually posted about it yet.  First off, I’m going to go on and let everyone know that I unfortunately don’t use Flock to it’s full potential just because I don’t actually think some times.  But the browser is simply amazing.

Flock’s title is “The Social Web Browser” and I have to say it definitely meets that goal.  If you’re the type of person who uses Twitter, Facebook, Photobucket, Flickr, WordPress, etc.  basically any site with true social content, Flock has some pleasant and convenient integration with these services.

In all honesty, I’m probably the WORST person to write a Flock review (or review of anything for that matter) because I don’t really think it’s essential to go in depth, and I think everyone’s better off if they just try the service on their own.

But Flock’s features are very much useful.  First off, let’s take Firefox.  Flock is based off of Firefox, and in its infant stages was often viewed by many as nothing more than Firefox with a bunch of pre-installed extensions, but that’s not the case.  For anyone that is socially active online, Flock is simply the way to go.  It has a media bar where you can see videos or pictures your friends upload on sites such as Flickr, Youtube, Facebook, etc.  There’s also nice fun stuff like being able to see your friends’ Twitter or Facebook status without having to go to either site.

For bloggers, Flock is convenient for a large number of reasons. I always forget that Flock has a draft save feature so if I ever have an idea pop up, I just have to draft it and save it for whenever.  I’m aware that most blogging sites have a similar feature, but what makes Flock nice is that you can browse the web freely as you type your post, without having to open a new tab.  You can simply copy and paste things into the post at your own free will.  Once the post is done, you can tag it from in the browser, and even post it to multiple blogging sites.

Speaking of copying and pasting, Flock has a more than adequate web clipboard allowing you to highlight anything on a page, drag and drop it onto the Flock clipboard, and voila, it’s there.  Either to be shared with friends, or put into a blog post.

Along with its features of being able to view the content of others, Flock allows you to easily upload media to the services integrated with the browser, so uploading pictures to Flickr, videos to youtube, etc. can easily be done as a batch operation, including batch tags, descriptions, etc.  Any media in your media bar can also be easily shared with your friends across the various services just by clicking a share button.

One thing you have to understand is I’m merely brushing the surface on Flock’s uses and features here.  You truly have to give it a real try out and attempt to adjust to it.  If you like Firefox and use any of the services Flock integrates, it’s more than worth the download.  Even if you don’t use the services, Flock is a good reason to sign up for the sites and begin using them, because it actually makes things so much more convenient.

  1. This is a truly awesome post about Flock. Would you be ok if we used a quote from your post on http://www.flock.com? You say it so much better than we can! :)

Let me know if that’s ok!

  2. Hey, I left you an e-mail saying it was alright, but figured I’d say it again here just incase you don’t get to the e-mail any time soon.

But yes, you’re more than welcome to quote it, in fact I’d be flattered.

  3. Of all the browsers that I have ever used,or even just previewed-I must say that Flock is far and away my favourite and most pleasurable of all. With increased speed of operation as well as easy access to you tube, facebook, and so much more-let me just say that Flock has made my life just a whole lot easier-as well as so much more enjoyable.Pleased would be a large under statement! TY.

  4. You all seems to be a bunch of marketing wankers spewing off on how great is indeed a firefox with a sorry bunch of pre-installed whizbang; I mean, if you REALLY want a minibar next to the kitchensink in your browser, why not get it? It’s probably available somewhere, that’s right, for Firefox. Or Opera. Or some other Real Browser. Doesn’t it bother you the least bit that there are really no commentors here saying anything with a substance? Other than, “it’s great” and “I’m all wet already” and “buy buy buy, it’s free!”

Bottom line, I don’t get it how Flock ever got the Webby. On the other hand, I don’t get why they gave it to the rest of the bunch that got it; obviously you have mastered the rudiments of Hype and are a potential multi-zillion business (one day).

Choke on your Web 2.0 smugness. I hope I’ll never have to start using Flock like I had to start using the bloody Fakebook ): everyone just IS there…

  5. errata (flaming with a rapid-fire mode on :) *You all seem like a bunch of … (as in y’all :)

right. Sorry about that. Now I’ll go mind my business elsewhere.

  6. gahhh… automatic smileys.

  7. Hey sigs, thanks for commenting. I can understand how you might feel that way about the whole Flock thing, everyone has their opinions. Me, personally, I was just trying to encourage my friends to use it since I feel as though the whole Firefox browsing engine is generally more safe than Internet Explorer (for the typical user, just because to me Firefox and Flock seem to be more naturally cautious)

and I know most of my friends use social networking sites, especially Facebook, so it would make sense if they just used Flock for it along with Youtube, and I think most of them would get into Twitter.

When I posted this post I had NO idea it would end up being seen by anyone related to the company, or even remotely spread since most of my other posts are generally ignored.

But I think what most of the comments are doing is just expressing an opinion and sharing their positive experiences. If anyone has a truly negative EXPERIENCE as opposed to just disliking the fact that some people appear to like the browser, then they are more than welcome to comment.

  8. Well if it help me get a wife on my spaceship then it would not hurt.
